Town of North Hempstead officials met last week with Long Island Nets G-League officials Alton Byrd, vice president of business relations and general manager Matt Riccardi.

The L.I. Nets utilize the Town’s “Yes We Can” Community Center’s (YWC) NBA-sized basketball court as its practice facility.

The team recently purchased a new scoreboard for the YWC basketball court, a shot-clock and also gifted a team jersey to the Town for display. The team has been generous throughout the year by providing giveaways at Town events, and also provided a permanent live Christmas tree outside the YWC for holiday celebrations.

In September, the team’s back-to-school “Stuff-A-Bus” campaign in partnership with the Town and the United Way of Long Island, collected back to school supplies for low-income families throughout Nassau County.

Stuff-A-Bus gathers thousands of supplies in order to help students excel in the 2019/2020 school year. The Town of North Hempstead distributed supplies to the students and staff at the Park Avenue School in Westbury.

“The Nets have demonstrated a commitment to the residents of North Hempstead and beyond in a variety of ways and we are proud to have them call our “Yes We Can” Community Center home,” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “The new scoreboard and shot clock are greatly appreciated by all the youth in our basketball and after school programs.”

“Their regular presence at YWC has been noticed for more than just basketball,” Council Member Russell. “Both the youth and adults alike throughout the Town of North Hempstead have benefited greatly from the relationship we have built with Alton Byrd and the L.I. Nets brand of programs working with our local school districts, veterans, businesses and other community stakeholders. I am enthusiastically looking forward to seeing where the growth of our partnership will take us.”

The L.I. Nets completed a very successful 2018-2019 season this summer when the team earned the Championship of the Eastern Conference.

The Town Board recently approved an agreement with the L.I. Nets for the continued use of the YWC facility as its practice location for the next year.
