School counselors at North Middle School recently organized the “College Scavenger Hunt” to encourage conversations about college, challenging students to find staff who meet 15 different criteria based on their college experiences.

During this 20-minute activity, students walked around the building, asked teachers where they attended college, and identified North Middle staff members who had a major and a minor, graduated Magna or Summa Cum Laude, earned a scholarship, attended college in a different time zone, attended a private university, played an instrument or a sport in college, and participated in a study abroad program.

Students who successfully completed the activity received a prize from one of the 50 colleges that supported this program with donations.

The College Scavenger Hunt required students to use vocabulary words related to the college search and learn about different college offerings, while fostering connections with North Middle teachers. Students and faculty were also encouraged to wear collegiate attire for the day.

The U.S. Department of Education (1999), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (1996) and the National Association of College Admission Counseling (1999) recommend that students begin planning for college as early as the sixth grade.

North Middle school counselors are Michele Israel, Brendan Nelson, and Department Head Tracey Segal.
