Northwell Health raised $1 million with three fundraising walks on Sunday in New York, two of which were on Long Island, according to the health network.

The money raised from the annual Northwell Health walk was a record for Northwell. More than 6,000 walkers participated in Jones Beach, East End Long Island and Staten Island combined, according to Northwell.

Each walk donated funds to a different Northwell institution: Jones Beach toward the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center, East End Long Island toward Peconic Bay Medical Center and Staten Island toward Staten Island University Hospital’s family, women and newborn center. The Jones Beach walkers also supported a cancer research grant.

“The Northwell Health Walk is an inspiring day where you see community members come together and fundraise to help us outpace the impossible – all with the common goal to advance care for the patients we serve,” Brian Lally, senior vice president and chief development officer for Northwell Health, said in a news release.

A 4-year-old named Clementine who was born at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and soon after had open-heart surgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center attended the walk with her parents.

Her mother, Kathleen, whose last name Northwell did not provide, went to Katz Institute during her pregnancy. It was there that she learned her child would have Down syndrome and a heart defect.

“You’re giving these babies and these children, bright futures to look forward to, and you’re giving the parents so much peace of mind,” she said. “It’s a priceless gift.”
