NYU Winthrop holds staff contest for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

First Place winner in NYU Winthrop's "How Pink Can You Go?" photo contest

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to promote awareness, NYU Winthrop Hospital urged staff to dress “as pink as possible” in the work setting for a hospital-wide photo contest.

The submissions poured in, in every pink hue imaginable. There were pink scrubs, gloves and masks, pink ribbons and balloons, pink glasses, scarves, socks and Crocs—and even pink hair. Staff went all-out, with all genders of staff clearly having fun in their effort to remind the public to help support and fight breast cancer.

It’s all part of the American Cancer Society’s efforts to unite survivors, supporters, and the general public to celebrate breast cancer awareness through non-traditional formats this year.

NYU Winthrop had some very pink winners. First place went to the Department of Geriatrics, Palliative Care, and Infectious Diseases with the simplicity of a pink-hued stethoscope bent into the shape of a heart.

Second place went to NYU Langone Women’s Health-New Hyde Park & Woodbury, with a group photo of a very pink staff that front-and-center includes a breast cancer survivor. Third place went to NYU Langone Health Perinatal Associates with its framed group shot that urged “Fight Like a Girl!”

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetimes. And in 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to have been diagnosed in women, as well as approximately 2,700 cases in men.

More than 3.8 million U.S. women with a history of breast cancer were alive on January 1, 2019. So, chances are we all know someone that has been challenged with the disease—all the more reason to go pink for breast cancer awareness.
