Reader’s Write: Christmas is over, but needy remain

The Island Now

Christmas is gone but not the giving to the many in need. Our food kitchens and food pantries are still in need and that means all year long.

Let’s not forget our blood banks who are in desperate need of donations this time of the year when the donations are low. This I know only too well since I just ran a blood drive at St. Anastasia parish in Douglaston, as a member of St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus.

This year as we all make our New Years resolutions let’s resolve to help the poor, needy and homeless but giving to those religious and community groups that help those in need.

Now finally let me relay a story I heard at Mass on Christmas Day at Our Lady of the Snows in Floral Park by Rev. Kevin McBrien.

There was this Christmas pageant and there was this boy who was ask to be the Inn Keeper who denied Joseph, Mary and Jesus room at the inn and didn’t want to deny the holy family a room.

A compromise was achieved and the young boy said,” There is no room at the inn but you can come in for some milk and cookies.”

Now that says something.

I guess the moral of the story is that even though we cannot help personally those who can should help by donated time and money for our poor who are in desperate need all year long.

Now that is a great New Year’s resolution and that is a beautiful thing to do. For it is in charity that is the greatest gift we can give to others.
