Reader’s Write: Corporations can’t be trusted to do their own food testing

The Island Now

As interest in the food we eat grows, we are talking about labeling food with realistic portion sizes, calorie counts and nutritional values but we need to go much deeper to supply information about what is in our food and how it is produced.

Is our food safe; how does it affect us and the environment?

A New York Times poll revealed that 93 percent want labeling.

In 64 countries (over half of the world’s population) labeling of GMO foods (Genetically Modified Organisms) is required.

The New York State Legislature is considering a bill to require the labeling of GMO foods. These foods should be avoided because of their effect on the environment and possible health impacts.

The Food and Drug Administration does not mandate testing, but allows the makers to do their own.

How far would you trust Monsanto and other corporate giants in the food industry? Why are they spending millions, fighting tooth and nail to prevent required testing, using us as their guinea pigs?

Please call your state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel (518) 455-5192 and urge her to vote for bill A3525 (GMO labeling bill).

Be prepared to provide your name, address and possibly your email and or phone number.
