Editorial: Richard DeMartino for Town Council, 5th District

The Island Now

North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Lee Seeman (D-Great Neck), who represents North Hyde Park, Garden City Park, Floral Park and six Great Neck villages, is in her 12th year in office, and has worked in politics for more than 30 years.

Seeman’s experience is impressive.

She became a state Democratic committeewoman in 1970 and has been the program director of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce since 1975 and worked in the Clinton and Bush administrations as a member of the United State Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad.

Her Republican opponent, Richard DeMartino, is a political newcomer but he also boasts a strong background and strong commitment to North Hempstead.

A Vietnam War veteran who served aboard the USS Ticonderoga from 1969 to 1972, DeMartino currently works on the North Hempstead Veterans Committee.

DeMartino, a banker and businessman who has lived in New Hyde Park for 40 years, said that drawing upon his decades with the Great Neck, Floral Park and Greater New Hyde Park Chambers of Commerce he could give the business community a stronger voice.

Both DeMartino and Seeman say they are committed to keeping town taxes down. Both say they support transit-oriented housing to increase the availability of low- and middle-income housing. Both have extensive community ties and have been active in supporting their community.

Both would be a good choice for voters.

But we believe it is time to bring a fresh approach to the Town Board, aided by a strong background in business.

We endorse Richard DeMartino for the Town of North Hempstead’s 5th Council District.
