From the desk of Superintendent Robert W. Katulak: Giving thanks in hurricane’s wake

The Island Now

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving will be upon us in a few weeks. We are all very grateful that we survived the ravishes of Hurricane Sandy with minimal destruction, however it always provides us a moment to pause and think of all the blessings we have in our lives.

In the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District, we have had a wonderful year.

To start off with, we have an excellent administrative staff that puts the needs of students as their first priority and does everything in their power to help students excel to excellence. Our teachers are the best and the brightest in the county. They continue to expand their teaching repertoire by taking professional development classes in the new learning standards and assessments and work hard to transfer those strategies to help our students do their best.

Our district has done an outstanding job this year winning accolades as Reward Schools, winning perfect audits and winning grants to further enhance student, teacher and administrator performances.

We are thankful because we have dedicated parents who are there when you need them to support their children either through fund raising, classroom helpers/volunteers or political advocates for educational and tax reform. Our parents play an important role in the creation of student programs such as our Character Education and Dignity for All Students Act and keep informed by attending workings sponsored by the SEPTA subcommittee of the PTA and from Common Core Standard Workshops.

Most importantly we are very thankful for a supportive community which supports our schools, attends our special events and speaks highly of the efforts of our students and staff. As we approach another Thanksgiving 2012, we are grateful for all who help create us to be all that we can be!
