Readers Write: Historic rose garden shows its beauty

The Island Now

The historic Beatrix Farrand Rose Garden shone gloriously in spectacular sunshine on Saturday, June 7th when the Great Neck Garden Club invited the community to enjoy the roses in bloom.

Thanks to the Great Neck Park District Commissioners Robert A. Lincoln and Dan Nachminoff for their support in the refurbishing of this special garden, and most especially to Commissioner Ruth J. Tamarin, who first envisioned this project, sought our cooperation.

With GNPD Superintendent Peter Renick at the helm, and Rick Canfield and his crew providing the manpower, the garden received a new watering system and the beds were outlined, edged and composted.

More than three dozen new rose bushes were added to the already extensive collection of roses.  These were generously donated by the Long Island Rose Society, the GN Park District as well as the GN Garden Club.

During the afternoon, we sat under a big old shade tree and watched GN Garden Club member, Marisa Katzurin, create beautiful floral designs with roses.  We encourage members of the Great Neck community to stroll through Rose Garden, which lies within the brick wall behind the War Memorial on the Villager Green (or through the iron gate behind GN House), and discover the beauty and serenity that lies within.
