Readers Write: Honoring 11-year-old who lost her battle with cancer

The Island Now

On Sunday June 22nd at 9:00 a.m., at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home at Lakeville Road and Lowell Avenue, the McBride family will host the inaugural “Katie’s Run” to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

This wonderful event will include a 5K run, a 2-mile Run/Walk and a Children’s Fun Run to be enjoyed by families, friends and supporters in memory of Katie McBride, a beautiful beacon of inspiration who left all who loved her in the prime of her childhood.

Katie fought a valiant battle against Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer, that spread to her bone marrow escalating her diagnosis to leukemia.  She fought this battle for many months and passed into the hands of God on March 1, 2008.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island was the home of the McBride family for many months. It enabled Katie to have her mother and family with her during all the grueling treatments.

The assistance and support that Ronald McDonald House provided over the course of those months was immeasurable. The McBride family and supporters would like to show their appreciation for all their help and for the help they continue to provide other families in the same situation.

Please come out on June 22nd and support the Katie McBride Foundation by participating in one of the runs or by donating directly to the foundation.

The strength of Katie and her family has been a remarkable testament to the love of family and the enduring notion that God has a plan for each one of us that solidifies are faith each and every day.
