From the desk of Mayor Paul Ehrbar: Keeping Memorial Day in mind

The Island Now

This Monday, May 28, the country will be observing  Memorial Day.

This day has been set aside by an act of Congress to honor those who died in all American wars. While the village offices will be closed , as are most other government offices, the village will recognize  this holiday with typical American tradition.

At 9 a.m., at the American Legion Post 144 on Willis Avenue, ceremonies will be taking place honoring those who died serving in the military during wartime while also honoring  those members of both the legion and lady auxiliary  who passed away during this past year.

This a very solemn,  meaningful event, of which I will be extremely proud to be part of, representing the Village of Williston Park.

After this ceremony is concluded  members of the legion, along with the Williston Park Fire Department and other community groups will assemble in the Legion parking lot for the annual Memorial Day Parade sponsored by the American Legion.

The parade will proceed through the village, stopping at Village Hall for a ceremony honoring all those who have died in all American wars. After this  ceremony is completed the Williston Park fireman move on to the firehouse where a solemn ceremony honoring their deceased of the past year will take place.

At that time, a dedication of  a firefighter statue dedicated to “America’s Heroes’ will take place. This sculpture, created by Collette and Gary Pitcher has been donated to the Williston Park Fire Department through the efforts  the of the Greely Centennial Rotary Club ,the Rotarians of District 5440  and the Williston Park Rotary Club.

It is my understanding that local business owner Maryanne Fearon’s efforts helped to bring the statue to Williston Park. I encourage all resident to come out to watch the parade, applauding our veterans, and fireman for their dedicated service. Doing so demonstrates respect for all those who have died for this  great country of ours, the United States of America.

Former Village of Williston park Mayor Roger Fay was recently hospitalized. While  he has been released from the hospital and is greatly improved, he is presently receiving rehabilitation in a local facility. He hopes to return home in the near future. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Pool registration has begun for the 2012 season.  I encourage all to sign up early in order to save $50. Applications are in the Village Green. For those who do not have a copy of the Village Green, applications can be picked up at Village Hall or by downloading the form from the Village web site(villageofwillistonpark.org).

Sanitation continued: June 4 is the start of the new sanitation schedule. As noted previously, the current issue of the Village Green has a detailed scheduled included.

Again, I ask residents if they haven’t yet done so, read the information and save the pullout section for future use. The information can also be obtained at the village Web site.

Major changes includes pickup of recycles and papers on a rotating basis on Wednesdays. Heavy pick up will no longer be on Wednesdays but rather picked up twice a week on normal garbage pickup day.

The nice weather is here (although I think the weather was milder in February than in April), and more people, young, seniors, and all those in between are out walking throughout the village.

Safe driving is critical for if all are to be comfortable using our streets and sidewalks. Ironically it’s not just drivers passing through who are careless but also residents.

Be concerned! Please  drive safely and put the phone away until safely stopped and parked (legally).
