A Florida man was arrested in New Hyde Park on Sunday afternoon after assaulting two police officers who were attempting to arrest him, Nassau County Police reported.

Third Squad detectives said Joel Daguillard, 31, of 14232 SW 152 Court Miami, FL was backing into a handicap parking spot in front of 669 Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park at 3:26 p.m. on April 15 when he was observed by a police officer from the 3rd Precinct.

Detectives said the officer approached the vehicle and saw marijuana on the front seat. The officer also saw that the driver’s children, ages six and two, who were in the back seat, were not properly secured in safety seats, police said.

When the defendant was asked to exit the vehicle, police said, he refused to do so. A struggle ensued as two officers from the 3rd Precinct placed Daguillard under arrest. During the struggle, one officer suffered a laceration to his finger and was taken to an area hospital where he received stitches for the injury.

The children were left in the custody of their mother.

Daguillard is charged with assault second degree, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was arraigned on April 16 at First District Court in Hempstead.
