Reader’s Write: More detail needed on Sewanhaka bond

The Island Now

I read the article “Sewanhaka to add bond info online” in the April 25 edition of the New Hyde Park Herald Courier and was disappointed that it quoted me out of context.

In doing so, the writer misrepresented the information that I was requesting from the board concerning the proposed $86.6 million 20-year bond.

What I was asking the board to do was to provide a copy of the bond budget, showing Work to be Done (the intended projects) in each of the five schools, and the Estimated Cost (in dollars) for each individual project.  A budget of this type was posted last fall by the board for the $99.9 million bond, and it gives the voter an idea of how the board plans to allocate the funds.

I have requested this information regarding the present bond proposal on several occasions; however, the board has not yet been forthcoming with it.

I am not asking simply for a list of intended projects, which is what was posted today.  This information is not sufficient.

The board needs to provide the additional budgetary information, by school, and to make it available to the public.  $86.6 million (plus interest) is an enormous amount of tax revenue!
