VGN board: Naru Sushi good to go

The Village of Great Neck Plaza Board of Trustees approved a series of routine payments and granted a permit to a local restaurant at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

Elizabeth Park, who acquired ownership of Tokyo Naru Sushi in February of this year, petitioned the board for a conditional-use permit for her restaurant.

The permit was approved unanimously, following questioning led by Village of Great Neck Plaza Mayor Jean Celender regarding Naru Sushi’s operating hours, seating and use of public roads for deliveries and employee parking.

For Park, the board’s permitting process was easy to navigate.

“I felt very welcome,” Park said. “Everything went smooth.”

The board also announced the receipt of a grant to help train officials on the village’s historic preservation commission.

The grant is part of the  Certified Local Government program, a state-federal partnership  designed to promote local historic preservation. The board unanimously approved the grant, which provides $6,000 in funding to be matched by $4,000 in village contributions.

“The commissioners are unpaid volunteers,” said Trustee Pamela Marksheid. “Although these people have been on the commission for quite a few years, most of them, it’s always good to have training.”

Trustee Gerald Schneiderman said that commissioner trainings are important due to the changes in laws governing historical preservation.

Also approved was the hiring of an engineer to inspect the Grace Avenue parking lot construction site.

“For a project of this size and scope, it would be useful to have engineering services,” said Celender.

The engineer will be paid $70 per hour, with a maximum payment of $8,400.
