Readers Write: Mayor should not sell Baker Farm

The Island Now

Last week Great Neck village trustees authorized Mayor Bral to sell our village hall. What could they do other than go against Bral’s already made decision? The mayor authorized himself to sell our historical land (read Breezy Hill, the Baker Farm by Mills P. Baker) despite a campaign promise that if elected he would not sell. Why is he going back on his word? Why is he bailing out Lalazarian (next gen) a developer who lives in another village?A developer who has and never will have our village’s best interest.

Mayor Bral lives here, he should have asked us, the residents who will be footing the bill. But then why should he? This will be the second time he has purchased land.  Remember last year Ravine Road? As I have been muted from Village Hall Zoom meetings, I must ask my questions publicly.

Question: I understand the appraisal of $800,000 purchase price from Goodman & Marks, but I question the terms and conditions. Since when does a seller dictate the property to be used only for a village hall for the next 25 years? Also, restricting the parcel from being sold to any entity in common ownership with or otherwise joined with the parcel to the north for 50 years. Plus restricting the parcel from being used for residential for 50 years. Please explain.

Some time ago our Iranian residents wanted to erect a monument of Cyrus the Great on the village green to preserve their history. In 1898 Solomon M. Harris came north from Virginia to work on the Baker Farm. What would he think?

This is our history. We are fast becoming a village where only a few memories remain. Keep the Baker property.
