Readers Write: Adopt-A-Pole shows spirit of Manhasset

The Island Now

Manhasset is a special place and our downtown district, Plandome Road, is very small but the heart of the hamlet.

Each year, the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce tries to beautify Plandome Road with hanging plants that are displayed on many lamp posts that line the road. The costs of these plants and planters are significant and with the ailing economy can not be sustained by the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce alone.

The Adopt-A-Pole campaign has been in place for decades, asking the community and the various organizations who use Mary Jane Davies Park for their activities and enjoy Plandome Road to support purchasing these flowers and helping the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce adorn the pole for the seasonal decorations which make Manhasset, the wonderful place to live.

This year our supporters for Adopt-A-Pole include:

Many thanks to Manhasset Chamber of Commerce Adopt-A-Pole coordinator, Diane Harragan, who sent solicitation letters, at her own cost, to support this beautification effort. We also acknowledge the hard work of former Co-President Elizabeth Johnson, who planted the flowers in all the planters along Plandome Road this summer with the funds available. We also thank the anonymous contributors who took it upon themselves to plant plants in planters and make them stellar.

The beautification of Plandome Road would have not been possible without the generous grant received from the Town of North Hempstead through the efforts of Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Town Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey. During this historic time, the efforts of Supervisor Bosworth and Councilwoman Lurvey pressed into service their staff to hang and water these plants and planters to maintain their health and beauty for all to enjoy.

Your contributions are imperative for the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce to continue their efforts. Please consider sending a check for $100 or whatever you are able to Manhasset COC, P.O. Box 754, Manhasset, NY 11030, earmark it “Adopt-A- Pole.”  We have to pre-order for 2021 now in November. Your generous contributions are welcome.
