Readers Write: Amid Trump chaos, progress stalls

The Island Now

Robert Reich, who served presidents Ford and Carter, and was Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton, and is now Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at University of California, Berkeley declared last week that must impeach President Trump now.

Every day he becomes a greater danger.

In sum, he has no idea how to run our beloved country and perhaps some of the evidence, in no particular order of importance, follows:

He has named for his cabinet, individuals who are unqualified, or are known to oppose remedies for several problems.

For example, the secretary of education has never attended a public school and is known to favor charter schools that satisfy undesirable agendas.

The secretary of the EPA has worked to abolish standards that will protect our environment. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development is a noted brain surgeon who did not want the appointment and has expressed opinions unsympathetic to groups who need programs of his agency.

And these people are systematically diluting Obama policies.

To manage our economic policies he appointed Goldman Sachs veterans! And so on.

In some cases offers of a position to well qualified candidates have been rejected.

Of course, the President is under investigation for obstruction of justice and is searching for legal advice.

It has been difficult to find attorneys, He has been refused by many candidates Trump is known to neglect to pay their fees and reject advice.

Others in jeopardy are hesitating to engage help which they are sure to need.

Trump denies any business ties to Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the Philippines, etc. and therefore maintains ties to their leaders and is uncritical to strong men and their abuses.

Of course Trump sons have forgotten their father’s denial of business connections, and have said that the money from Russia has poured in.

They have needed it because American banks have given up trusting Trump to pay his debts.

Incidentally, such business practices violate the emoluments clause in the Constitution, which prohibits profiting from gifts. He has also recently renewed foreign patents.

During his campaign and after, he has debased the standards of political discourse, aroused his supporters to commit violence, and even treated foreign dignitaries with surprising disrespect.

Now that the country must be governed in order to fulfill all the promises to “Make America Great” and respected by the rest of the world, some distractions have appeared.

Trump commented on our NATO allies’ failure to pay their dues, even handing Angela Merkel a bill.

This kind of disrespect has weakened a long standing alliance that had prevented possible wars and our necessary cooperation from other members.

We can fear that departures of countries from the European community do not bode well for economic and security concerns..

Returning to the need for making America great for our citizens, let us not forget that there are many distractions.

Morale among the president’s staff cannot be good.

Witness the recent meeting at which several capable officers felt it necessary to bolster  his ego by obsequious thanks for the honor of being chosen to work for him.

Some silently did not join the sycophants.

It is truly regrettable that we have allowed a person who should not be allowed to lead the most powerful nation in the world to remain in office because his party is afraid of a voting minority that has been fooled by this abominable, deranged showman.

In the meantime, several important programs are awaiting attention. Do we remember that we have to deal with:

– A fair affordable universal health care system

– Repair and implementation of existing and new infrastructure that matches the promise of our economy.

– Education that meets the employment needs of our population

– Control of our environment

– Tax reform

Along with all these needs are attention to the interests of our voters, reinvigoration of their belief and assurance that their voices will be heard.

We must fight indifference if we are to attend to the heavy tasks we will inherit.
