Readers Write: D’Urso should not support Markowitz

The Island Now

An open letter to Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso, NY District 16

Where were you and what were you doing at 5:37 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015?

I am writing to you in response to your opinion letter I read in the Great Neck News that appeared July 26. The letter was written in defense of Steven Markowitz purporting that he never sent the hate email.

Again, can you recall where you were and what you were doing at 5:37 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015? If you were not next to Mr. Markowitz, witnessing that he was doing something other than sending emails, your support letter for Mr. Markowitz only qualifies as nothing beyond a character reference letter without substantiation.

It is my hope that you wrote the letter to the editor prior to Mr. Markowitz’s taking responsibility for the 2015 hate letter against certain group of Jews whom he personally does not identify with. Only after the hard evidence surfaced — an individual who had replied to his hate email verified the validity of the hate and scare tactic email — Mr. Markowitz had no choice other than taking the responsibility and issuing an apology.

You inherited the most awesome and stellar reputation of your parents.  As Gentiles, they went out of their way to protect Jewish families during the Holocaust. I hope that you would maintain your parents’ legacy and you would stay away from politics at any cost.   Otherwise, the politics would inevitably stain such an awesome inheritance.

Regardless, it is my humble suggestion that as an official, as someone who personally witnessed the Holocaust and most important of all, as the son of heroes, you should condemn the use of hate language and scare tactics.

Let’s hope that similar scenarios would not occur in the future.
