Readers Write: Earth Day can be a new beginning

The Island Now

On April 22, 1970 Earth Day was born, a tangible statement of the growing support for protection of our environment.  Today it is celebrated every year in 193 countries around the world.

Fifty years ago today, the golden anniversary of that first celebration, I often wonder why people fight so hard to ignore the lessons it has to teach.  Patrick Moynihan the senator from New York once said: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”

Many in our country have the ability to “adjust” to the results of climate change.  They fly away from an approaching storm, have insurance to fix its damage, but clearly you can’t distance yourself forever.

No amount of denial or money will insulate you from the forces of nature as evidenced by the Pandemic caused by Covid-19

I created this image of a virus 1,000 times smaller than a spec of sand engulfing our world.  The smallest bit of nature overrunning our whole planet.

It is hard to deny how dependent we are on one another, on scientists and on the world community working together.  Earth Day 2020 can be a new beginning.
