Readers Write: Flower Hill ignores pandemic protcols

The Island Now

Apparently rules don’t apply to the affluent people of Flower Hill.

Contrary to all of the other local park closures, Flower Hill park remains open, with the exception of the playground areas and sports courts.  The closure is only indicated by signs and there are no physical barriers for those choosing to disregard those signs.

Despite those signs, families were out and about Saturday, using the courts and the playgrounds. No masks. No apparent regard for the fact that these areas were closed – even to the privileged who call Flower Hill home.

In non-pandemic conditions, Flower Hill park is full of unleashed dogs, whose owners seem to believe these rules don’t apply to them.

Now in pandemic conditions, walking a leashed dog is like running a gauntlet of those who will don’t believe in rules, social distancing or common courtesy. And heaven forbid you challenge someone to leash a dog or to keep their distance.

Ignorance and arrogance in Flower Hill have no bounds.

Why won’t the leaders of Flower Hill, in concert with the Nassau County Police Department which uses the Village Hall parking lot as its own, do something to protect the innocent and compliant citizens?

If people won’t do the right thing on their own, there needs to be consequences, not an abdication of authority.
