Readers Write: Giving blood can be gift of life

The Island Now

I have just seen a news conference where the U.S. Surgeon General stated we are having a serve blood shortage and donations are needed now.

I think those who can please donate blood, and by doing so would be an act of kindness. Those who donate blood will be helping many people. There is no substitute for human blood.

One in three people will need blood sometime in their lives. One pint of blood saves three lives. Blood lasts only 42 days. Your blood donation is critically important now and greater than ever before.

Around 75 percent of the incoming blood supply was interrupted due to the coronavirus, when schools, businesses, and religious institutions closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. In response, the New York Blood Center has increased capacity at donor centers by extending hours and opening for extra days a week. These modifications help control a safe environments for healthy donors.

For more information, you can call 1-800-933-2566 or by visiting nybc.org/coronavirus. Let me also point out I help run two blood drives a year as grand knight of St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus at St. Anastasia Parish in Douglaston.

So please display acts of kindness by giving the gift of life. Thank you!
