Readers Write: G.N. clergy should call for end to Markowitz attacks

The Island Now

We have known Steve Markowitz for almost 45 years since we both moved to Great Neck with our young children. We have admired him for all he does to make Great Neck a great place to live and raise families.

He has served as president of Temple Israel and created the inter-Synagogue rabbinic dialogue, bringing together clergy of all denominations.

Steve drafted the statement by the Town of North Hempstead to oppose the Iran nuclear deal.

For the past seven years he has served as chairman of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center.

Under his leadership, HMTC has grown to be the most important institution on Long Island fighting religious and racial intolerance, including divisions within the Great Neck community.

These are only a few of the wonderful things Steve has done. I find it shocking that anyone would charge him being anti-Semitic, anti-Orthodox, anti-Persian, anti-Republican and as being responsible for the divisive atmosphere in the Village of Great Neck.

We are disappointed the clergy of Great Neck is not doing more to support Steve and for not urging that these attacks stop.
