Readers Write: Government needs to not rely solely on ‘experts’

The Island Now

Dear Senator Kaplan:

It is clear that the threat of the virus is diminishing. Most people are exercising caution and it seems unlikely that there will be a significant spike once the restrictions are generally lifted.

The lockdown has caused a lot of collateral damage. The longer it continues, the greater the danger of harm. People are not getting other kinds of medical care. Businesses are folding. Tenants are threatening rent strikes.

Government officials have an obligation to broadly consider the public’s interests and not simply rely on “experts.”

Maintaining the “Pause” without a clear and predictable ending is an abuse of power.
