The Island Now

NYPD Detective Brian Simonsen was killed in friendly fire along with Sgt. Matthew Gorman who was wounded while responding to a robbery in Richmond Hill.

The suspect, Christopher Ransom, had 25 prior arrests, was wounded and is charged with many felony counts including murder.

Here was a hero cop who did what had to be done and it cost him his life. As Police Commissioner James O’Neill said, “Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it is because of the actions of the suspect that Detective Simonsen is dead.”

That is so very sad, a good and dedicated cop died because of the actions of another. He was loved and respected by family, friends, neighbors, fellow officers and especially the community he served in the 102nd Precinct as reported.

As such my heartfelt prayers go out to all who are mourning at this time. Remember this too: Let’s salute all those thousands of dedicated men and women police officers who put their lives on the line every day. God bless you all.
