Readers Write: Living a better life

Don’t get it twisted. Most people have racism inside of them. The best of us keep this very deep inside of our souls. Unfortunately, way too many people claim they have zero racist tendencies.

The simple truth is, that happens to be utter nonsense. People, you can’t claim to have friends from other religions, races or backgrounds. And ever speak a racist word. That erases all Goodwill and yes makes you a racist person. Even Pillow Talk is wrong.

Our vernacular needs to change. We need to live in an individualistic society. Treat others how you wish to be treated. Don’t hold the sins of others against the person in front of you. It is not okay to use derogatory terms at all. All lives matter, all of them!

One of the first thoughts we should have when we awake is how can I help someone. Hold the door open for them, bring a co-worker a cup of coffee, drop a dollar bill in a tip cup. No matter how small or big the gesture, it can truly go a long way to brightening up someone’s day. Simply be more courteous.

Whether you’re rich or poor you always have something that you can do for others. If we start and make an extra few thank yous and smiles happen. We could begin changing The Narrative of being a selfish Society. If you’re already doing this, then do more.

A wonderful man. Jim Valvano, who coached the North Carolina State men’s basketball team once said,” there are three things we should do every day. Number one, laugh. Number two, think. Number three, have your emotions brought to tears. That’s a full day that’s a heck of a day” he also said ” don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

Soon after this speech was given, while receiving the Arthur Ashe award at the ESPYs in 1993, he lost his life to cancer. He died less than two months after the speech.
To anybody watching this try to enrich another person’s life. No matter what don’t give up, don’t ever give up.

One last thing he said. Now keep in mind, this speech had a lot to do with cancer. I’m going to change his words a bit.

Don’t let racism take away all my physical abilities. Remember, it cannot touch my mind, it’s not touching my heart and it cannot touch my soul. Those three things are going to carry on forever.

Education, privilege and wealth shouldn’t mold you into the person you are. Your parents, family and community are where your core values need to come from. Progress and prosper. Progress and prosper people.
