Readers Write: Martins the right choice for county executive

The Island Now

I strongly support Jack Martins for county executive.

I have worked with Jack for many years, while he served as mayor of the Village of Mineola and state senator.

He is a tireless problem solver and no issue, large or small, escapes his attention. He is innovative and responsive. One has only to look at how the policies he began have transformed downtown Mineola into a model of transit-oriented development.

Jack is passionate and knowledgeable about getting local government to work for the people. As county executive, he will continue the work we have started in restoring the Nassau’s finances. He is easily more qualified than his opponent.

Jack’s opponent has virtually no qualifications to be the chief executive of a municipality with a $3 billion budget.

Among other things, Laura Curran has been touting how she reaches across the aisle at the Legislature and works with the majority Republicans. Nothing could be farther than the truth.

The Democrats in the Legislature have blocked more than $90 million dollars of funds for worthy infrastructure projects for purely political reasons.

These projects are important to our residents, including work on our sewage treatment plants, road repaving, park improvements and more. The delays created by the obstruction of Laura Curran and her colleagues not only threaten our vital infrastructure but will wind up costing county taxpayers more as the infrastructure deteriorates.

We needed only a single vote from the Democrat minority to approve this funding to get these critical infrastructure projects moving.

Laura Curran refused time and time again to give us that vote and has repeatedly voted against much-needed projects for all of our communities.

So, is she, as she claims, an effective legislator who reaches across party lines? Hardly.

Please join me in voting for Jack Martins for county executive Tuesday Nov. 7, 2017

Richard Nicolello

Nassau County Legislator, District 9
