Readers write: Support the Port Community Chest

The Island Now

Living in such a beautiful town can hide the needs of some of our neighbors. It can be difficult to see that many Port residents benefit from hot meals, academic and athletic scholarships and programs, counseling services, child care, vocational training, senior citizen activities, fresh produce, parenting support, tickets to theater programs, and much more that most of us take for granted. The Community Chest, in its 69th year, continues to raise funds to give out to 26 vetted nonprofits in town to improve the lives of our neighbors. Many of these charities do not have large fundraisers of their own and rely heavily on the funds received from the Community Chest. When the Community Chest started in 1949 almost 50 percent of Port residents made a donation. Last year it was only 10 percent who donated. As a board member since 2011, I ask you to please go to www.portchest.org or call 767-2121 to learn more and make a donation. Together we can proudly state, “I live here. I give here.”
