Readers Write: The Boy Scouts, a great organization for boys

The Island Now

As grand knight of St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus Council #5911, I had the proud honor and pleasure to present three young boys Eagle Scout certificates from the Knights of Columbus.

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor took place at St. Anastasia Parish in Douglaston on Feb. 23. The boys, or shall I call them now young men, have achieved the highest honor in the Boy Scouts, which is Eagle Scout.

The names of these young men are as followers: Paul Russell, Vito Vaccaro and Ryan Cahn of troop #153. These young men are dedicated to God, country and community and do many works of charity.

I know for a fact because they help helped my council and myself and co-chairman Giuseppe Petruso run two blood drives a year where I told them at the event that their help was immeasurable in saving lives.

I, myself, was a Boy Scout over 50 years ago and had found it quite rewarding. My good friend Harry Weymer and I were both members of scout troop #114 in Queens Village in the ’50s and ’60s. We had numerous camping trips and collected funds for toys and food for the needy.

Harry had brain cancer and has passed away last year, but I still remember the times we had in the Boy Scouts and how it instilled in us what was important for us like compassion and respect for others and made us responsible adults.

I think scouting is a great organization to belong to for a young boy, for it teaches good morals, charity to others and good citizenship. So please, parents everywhere, please consider enrolling your child into the Boy Scouts and you would be glad that you did.
