Readers Write: The missing cameo — A Christmas miracle

The Island Now

I fondly remember my mother, your typical stay-at-home mom, who loved her family more than anything else. Whenever we visited her, she always offered something that she baked. Her kitchen was the gathering place.

She didn’t have many material things, but her few treasures were kept in a small jewelry box. One of these trinkets was a cameo pin with a diamond in the center. My daughter Carol Ann always admired this pin and Nanny promised that someday it would be hers.

My mom passed away 20 years ago at the age of 97. After her funeral, my two sisters and I had to take care of the sad task of disposing her personal belongings.

Time passed and Carol Ann brought up the subject of the cameo pin. For some reason, no one in the family remembered where the jewelry box was. I had searched through all the dresser drawers and closets, to no avail. This went on for 20 years until Dec. 15, 2018.

My nephew went down to the basement, looking for something and magically came across a carton, with the missing jewelry box in it. And yes, the missing cameo as well.

What a wonderful Christmas this was. I anxiously waited until Christmas day and finally gave Carol Ann the cameo. Her first reaction was complete shock, and then the tears came.

The mystery of the missing cameo was solved.

Truly, a Christmas miracle.
