Readers Write: The topsy turvy world of Donald J. Trump

The Island Now

Have I gone mad? I’m afraid so, you’re entirely bonkers.

The Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll’s

Alice in Wonderland

Who called Trump a “kook unfit for office?” That same individual stated that POTUS was a “race-baiting, xenophobic bigot.” Any thoughts?

How about Alexandria  Octavio-Cortes,  Adam Schiff or, maybe, Nancy Pelosi?

Wrong! It’s Lindsey Graham, the senator from South Carolina and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee which will, shortly, be adjudicating the impeachment of the 45th president of the United States.

How can a person hold such views one day and sing the president’s praises the next?

This week, Time Magazine chose its person of the year, Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate change activist from Stockholm. This did not sit well with the Donald, who, obviously, thought he deserved it.

Time points out that the youngster  “addressed heads of state at the U.N., met with the Pope, and sparred with the president of the United States. She also addressed “the annual convention of CEOs and world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland.”

The fact that Trump thought he was more deserving of the award tells us something about his egocentrism.

It also takes chutzpah on the part of POTUS.  Chutzpah is a YIddish word  Dorothy Parker once defined as a young man who murdered his parents and pleaded with the judge on the grounds that he was an orphan.

At Thunberg’s many rallies, persons made signs such as “The dinosaurs thought they had time, too.” and a variation on the MAGA red cap often worn by Trump, only this one read “Make the world Greta again.”

I’ve been watching the endless hours of impeachment hearings in the House of Representatives. Might I suggest we ignore the Constitution’s  “high crimes and misdemeanors”  and, rather,  indict Trump for stating that the revered Federal Bureau of Investigation is “scum”?

But name-calling is not a crime. If it were,

Trump would be incarcerated   Nor, as we’ve all found out, is lying. Thanks to the Washington Post’s Fact Checker, the latest count is 13,435 false or misleading claims. Is it any wonder that Trump describes the press as the enemy of the people when, in fact, they preserve our democratic republic.

Some of my most loyal readers have commented that my letters have not been appearing with regularity.

Due to ill health, writing has become difficult. And unless the “orange Satan” is impeached by the Senate or loses by a  landslide in 2020, this may be my last letter to the editor.
