The change in property tax laws impacts negatively on itemized deductions for many Long Island homeowners. Thus at the last minute, Gov Cuomo and Rep Suozzi arranged for certain 2018 taxes to be paid late in 2017 so as to enable the deduction to be taken in 2017.
In freezing cold weather homeowners lined up on long lines to prepay.
Judy Bosworth, supervisor, Town of N Hempstead, and Charles Berman, receiver of taxes, made special arrangements to keep town tax offices open until late in the evenings and also on the last available weekend of 2017 so that by paying taxes then, homeowners could save money.
Not only that but to combat freezing temperatures on line, town officials gave numbers to people waiting outside, then accompanied them into town hall to keep them comfortably warm until it was their turn.
When I paid my taxes on Sunday, there was Judy working hard at a desk opening large stacks of letters.
