Readers Write: Vote yes for the Port school budget

The Island Now

I strongly encourage all Port Washington residents to support the school budget by taking the important step of voting yes on May 15.

We are blessed to live in a town that people want to raise their families in and that has an excellent school system.

Our school-age population continues to grow more rapidly than that of surrounding districts, and as a result, our schools need more teachers.

Providing a challenging and enriching education for our kids is something this community has always valued, and that requires responsible investments like the ones proposed in this budget.

Educating our children is the right thing to do as parents, as residents of our wonderful town and as citizens of the world. It is also the prudent thing to do as homeowners here, as our school district is one of Port’s primary attractions.

I grew up in Port Washington and went to Main Street School (now Landmark), Sousa, Weber and Schreiber.

I was lucky to have creative and passionate teachers throughout my 13 years, and was exposed to a variety of enrichment opportunities – PEP, Honors and AP classes, the Science Research Program at Schreiber.

I attended an Ivy League college, and when I got there I felt fully prepared by my experience in the Port Schools.

I moved back to Port five years ago, predominantly because I wanted to raise my children here. Amongst the many things about Port I’m thrilled to be sharing with my wife and kids, our schools remain at the top of the list.

Our school district is an asset that we need to continually invest in. This is a thoughtful and responsible budget.

A team from our community worked successfully to secure more state aid for our school district this year.

As a result of that and good planning, the proposed increase is below the tax levy cap. The additional expenses are targeted and necessary – adding valuable teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Education is the key to setting the children of our community on the paths to successful and satisfying lives. We all want to live in a town that believes in and supports our schools.   Make your opinion count by voting YES to our school budget on May 15th.

Thank you in advance,

Mike Sobel
