Readers Write: We are witnessing a blood libel against police

The Island Now

At the suggestion of Joan Swirsky, I did the following: I went down to my local police precinct and gave them a gift and a card telling them how much I appreciate their service to the community.

I hope all of you will do the same. Just call in advance for security reasons.

There are approximately 690,000 police officers in the United States. Last year, I believe they had 375 million, yes, million, encounters with citizens.

Between the years 1980-2000, on average, about 85 police officers are killed in the line of duty. These are all felonious deaths. It does not include accidents, i.e. car chases. Can you name just one victimized policeman?

What we are witnessing at this time, from the usual suspects, is a blood libel against the police. Your gift is an antidote to this.
