Readers Write: Where is Santa Claus?

The Island Now

This Christmas many children might be asking where is Santa Claus? The pandemic of 2020 has caused many hardships for parents. Millions of men and women are out of work and many have been sick and are dying of this most dreadful disease.

How does a parent tell a child Santa Claus will not make it this year because of COVID-19? Added to that, many families are struggling to make ends meet and that means trying to put enough food on the table. And now there are many families living in homeless shelters. In these shelters a child might ask, “Does Santa Claus visit homeless shelters?”

That is why I ask those who can to donate toys and clothes to churches, temples, community groups and organizations that collect toys for needy children. As such the many who can are Santa’s helpers and let a poor child know we care. And that poor child will have a smile on his or her face instead of a tear.

In 1897 the New York Sun ran an editorial written by Francis Church called “Is there a Santa Claus?  In what has become a beloved part of Christmas in the United States, the editorial said: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”

Well, we are all Santas and we can make the hearts of a child glad.
