Readers Write: Yakaitis, Dunning would continue to make street trees village responsibility

The Island Now

As Munsey Park trustee in charge of trees for over 18 years, an issue close to my heart is that of trees in the right-of-way, the strip (10 feet or so) in front of residents’ homes next to the roadway, that officially belongs to the village.

The village has recently planted new young trees along Park Avenue and Manhasset Woods Road. There are other areas in the village without sidewalks where this should be continued.

This Board of Trustees has adopted the viewpoint that should there be a dead or dying tree in that right-of-way location – a mature tree that has been there forever, planted by the village, it is the homeowner’s responsibility and great cost to take it down.

This policy was not made public nor voted upon.

Street trees have always been the responsibility of the village, not the homeowner.

They are what makes Munsey Park so beautiful.  Professional pruning is part of that care.

The planting of trees to replace those lost to storms or disease is vital.  It is equally important for the village to continue their care – not foist this responsibility onto the homeowner.

On March 20, please vote for Nathy Yakaitis and Brian Dunning, who will continue the decades-old policy of village tree maintenance.
