From the desk of Mayor Paul Ehrbar: Sanitation changes; pool opening apps

The Island Now

As I was unable to submit a column last week, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all mothers a belated Happy Mother’s Day!

Sanitation changes continued: As I write, all village residents should have already received their copies of the Village Green. I ask all to read and reread the section dealing with the pickup schedules and changes. It is important for all to familiarize themselves with the changes.

The question has been asked by a few residents” why the changes ?”. Simply put, these changes will allow for a more productive and efficient system while providing savings to the village.

Please detach this section of the Village Green and keep as a handy reference guide. The success of this program depends on the cooperation of all our residents.

Roger J. Fay Memorial Pool: Registration begins on Monday, May 21 at Village Hall. Please see the Village Green for an application and details regarding this year’s pool season. Paul Blake is returning as manager and Anne Buttafuoco is returning as assistant manager. A long, hot summer is expected this season so I encourage residents to sign up and enjoy this great asset of our village.

Recent past issues of the Williston Times have been disappointing to me as the mayor of Williston Park.

When reporting on the budget hearing, the article highlighted the concerns the board had with the library. The village board is fully supportive of  the Carl Del Vechio Memorial Library  and its long-term contribution to the residents. The discussion regarding the library was taken out of context. The concerns raised were minor while discussing a budget of $5 million dollars that came in under a 2 percent increase while maintaining the high level of village services.

Last week’s coverage of the public hearing regarding Willy Parkers, I believe, mischaracterized the demeanor of this hearing. While a number of speakers presented their individual views on both sides of the issue, the meeting on the whole was civil . Speakers were passionate about their views  but for the most part were respectful in their presentations.

The paper noted that “comments from those on both sides of the issue were frequently punctuated by applause and verbal outbursts despite Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar’s efforts to maintain order.”

A reader, not having attended the hearing, was left with the impression that the meeting was disorderly and out of control. In reality, order was maintained throughout the meeting, thanks to a cooperative audience .

This past week I was invited to attend the East Williston teen meeting. It was an enlightening experience ,as discussions and potential solutions were discussed regarding  proper and effective support and direction to area teens. I am hopeful that both Villages can work together in areas of common interest.

As noted in the recent Village Green, volunteer in various village committees provide valuable service to our community. I’d like to use this forum to highlight the different individual committees  that help to make this Village great.

I’d like to start this week mentioning the beautification committee. This group usually meets every other Sunday between April and November from 8 a.m. until approximately 9 a.m.  Cleaning and maintaining the Gazebo, Jack Zwiebel Little Park and the Hillside Ave medians and various other areas throughout the village contribute to the overall beauty and charm of Williston Park.

While  it would be difficult to mention all committee members when discussing the various group, Gene McCarthy is the backbone of this valuable committee. His support and direction  make for an efficient operation.

Any resident who would like to work alongside committee members feel free to contact me  through Village Hall (516-746-2193)and we will get you a schedule and T-shirt
