Reader’s Write: Town building permit process leaves residents in the cold

The Island Now

I live in the Town of North Hempstead. I submitted plans for a building permit. This turned out to be one of the worst nightmares of my life.

I am now told my home has violations going back to 1948.

My 50-year-old three-foot fence became illegal in 2011. Now it requires a permit/fees.

I am responsible for sewer connections from 1954. There is no grandfathering. Bathroom fixtures, stove, dryer, water heater requires permits/ fees.

Inspectors were in my home numerous times with approved plans having full disclosure of all work with new surveys on renovations, and completion certificates were issued.

Compliance with these new violations is unimaginably difficult and costly. The examiners and inspectors are rude, condescending and non responsive.

My husband is very ill and on disability. Paperwork is lost or misfiled. Phone calls and emails never returned.  I have e-mails saying the violation has been satisfied to find out it is not.

I was told I would not be put under time restraints and then there is a summons.

One inspector sent me an e-mail saying he would check the file and get back to me than went on vacation and now expects me to get everything done in two weeks!

Is the building department concerned with safety or money?
