The retrial of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and his wife, Linda, will begin on Oct. 9, a federal judge announced on Thursday.
The couple will once again be facing corruption charges after their case ended in a mistrial in May.
According to a Newsday report, U.S. District Judge Joan M. Azrack said the jury selection for the retrial will begin in September, although no specific date has yet been set. Prosecutors told Newsday that they expected the trial to last four to six weeks.
The Manganos’ last trial went on for 12 weeks, but the jury could not reach a conclusion on the couple and the nature of their relationship with restaurateur Harendra Singh.
Part of that trial was also focused on former Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, who was also facing corruption charges for his relationship with Singh.
Singh testified early in the case that he had showered the Manganos with free meals, gifts and a $450,000 no-show job for Linda Mangano in exchange for lucrative deals and county contracts.
Singh said that Venditto received similar treatment, giving the town supervisor free meals and limousine rides in exchange for millions in loan guarantees backed by Oyster Bay.
Edward Mangano and Venditto were charged with conspiracy to commit federal program bribery and honest services wire fraud. Mangano was additionally charged with extortion and Venditto with securities fraud.
Linda Mangano is charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, making false statements to the FBI and obstruction of justice. All three pleaded not guilty.
Venditto was found to be not guilty on all counts in May. But members of the jury became increasingly hostile as they failed to reach a decision on the Manganos, Newsday reported. After nine days of deliberations, Azrack declared a mistrial.
Prosecutors told Newsday that the planned to try Ed and Linda Mangano on the charges the duo was indicted on.
