Anna Kaplan will be going from North Hempstead Town Hall to the state Capitol on Jan. 2 next year, sparking a search for an interim candidate and setting the stage for a special election about a year from now.
Kaplan was first elected to the Town Board in 2011 to represent the fourth district, which includes Kings Point, Kensington, Thomaston, Great Neck, Manhasset, North Hills, Roslyn Estates and Roslyn. She was re-elected in 2015 for another four year term.
Kaplan then defeated state Sen. Elaine Phillips on Tuesday to represent state Senate District 7, which includes all of North Hempstead, Hicksville and Elmont.
Rebecca Cheng, a spokeswoman for the Town of North Hempstead, said the town board would officially vote on an interim town board member at a meeting in early 2019.
“Someone will be nominated for that position and they will take over in the interim,” Cheng said on Thursday.
The special election for someone to fill that seat would then take place in November 2019, she said.
While it’s unclear who will represent the district, Steve Markowitz, a vice chair for the Nassau County Democrats and president of the Great Neck Democratic Club, said that the person would likely be from Great Neck – but nobody is selected yet.
“That’s the big question now of course: who’s going to replace her on the town council,” Markowitz said. “All I can say is discussions are already underway about potential candidates.”
