Port community comes together for injured officer

Residents, local politicians and police departments in and around Port Washington have raised over $54,000 for a Port Washington police officer who sustained serious injuries that required multiple operations and left him in critical condition last month.

A GoFundMe page was set up for Officer Mike McNulty, who was involved in an accident while riding a motorcycle during a police escort on Jan. 28.

The page says McNulty’s recovery is expected to take years and he has undergone multiple surgical procedures and has more to go.

He is being treated at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

“The overwhelming outpouring of compassion – from prayers, to the display of bows along Port Washington Boulevard and Main Street, and more – is truly heartwarming,” Port Washington Police Chief James Salerno said.

The Port Washington PBA is hosting a blood drive for McNulty, who has been an officer for over three decades, on Monday at the Flower Hill Hose Company on Haven Avenue.

Residents have posted on Facebook and have contacted the Police Department, asking how they can help McNulty and his family.

“I’ve heard from so many people who have asked how and when they can help,” said Dave Franklin, a Port Washington Police Department commissioner. “Port Washington is a shining example of what a community is and does. I am proud to live and serve here.”

An update to the GoFundMe page said McNulty is still in the intensive care unit.

“Mike continues to make progress in his recovery little by little every day,” the update said. “He’s got a long road ahead and there are still many unanswered questions regarding his future health.”

Details of his injuries were not disclosed.

Steve Cammer, the union president for the Port Washington PBA, said “everyday residents, business owners and neighboring police agencies offered help and support for our injured officer.”

“It is truly amazing and humbling to see the Port Washington community support Officer McNulty and his family,” Cammer said.

In the comments section of the GoFundMe page, people offered their support for McNulty and shared stories of experiences with him.

“Mike has been an officer for over three decades and is well liked and respected by the community he has served,” Cammer said.

McNulty has a teenage daughter and a young son.

“On behalf of the Port Washington Police District and the McNulty family, I thank you for your thoughtfulness. It means more to us than you will ever know,” Salerno said.
