Each of Port Washington’s five elementary schools celebrated their fifth-graders’ completion of their elementary education with a special promotion ceremony, officially declaring them middle schoolers ready for the next step in their K-12 careers.
Fifth-graders from Daly, Guggenheim, Manorhaven, Sousa and South Salem elementary schools kicked off this special occasion by marching into their respective ceremonies in front of proud family members, friends and members of the faculty, staff, and administration. Principals commended fifth-graders on their accomplishments and growth through their six years in elementary school.
Superintendent Kathleen Mooney provided well wishes and solid words of advice to the advancing students.
“This is a big step for our fifth-graders. While there are many wonderful memories from their elementary years, there are many more to be made, first at Weber Middle School and later at Schreiber High School,” said Mooney, who presented each class with a small replica of a Wright brothers glider to symbolize the new heights they can achieve, and a reminder that aeronautics is among many new courses that will be available to them at their new school. “Every fifth-grader is equipped with the confidence and knowledge to succeed in their secondary school careers and can look forward to the support from caring staff members to help them soar to greatness.”
Fifth-grade teachers and principals presented the elementary diplomas to their students, as one by one each graduate’s name was read. Special promotion parties were also held for the students moving up, in addition to the traditional end-of-year picnics that reward all students for their hard work throughout the school year.
