Port residents eligible for free smart water irrigation system

The Island Now

The Port Washington Water District (PWWD) is proud to announce that thanks to the Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection (LICAP), Port Washington residents are now eligible to be selected for a free smart irrigation controller for their home. This offering is an extension of the District’s “Be Smart and Green, Save 15” water conservation campaign, and complements the PWWD’s own smart irrigation rebate program.

“Thanks to our friends at the Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection, our residents have another opportunity to conserve water and save money on their quarterly bills with help of smart irrigation technology,” said David Brackett, chairman of the PWWD Board of Commissioners. “This is an incredible resource for our community and we hope that our residents will continue to embrace this technology and help us build toward effectively sustaining our invaluable sole-source aquifer.”

Smart irrigation controllers are an effective tool for reducing landscape water use; they are designed specifically to optimize water usage, prevent over-watering, and keep lawns and gardens green and healthy. Smart irrigation controllers can use information such as local weather conditions, plant type, and soil moisture levels to determine accurate landscaping water needs. They can also automatically adjust watering schedules based on these criteria, allowing lawn and gardens to thrive under optimal watering conditions without the homeowner having to manually adjust the controller.

“The irrigation season can take a costly toll on our sole-source aquifer with water usage throughout our District rising more than 100 percent in the summer months,” said PWWD Commissioner Mindy Germain. “Our existing rebate system, in combination with this free offer from LICAP, really offers our residents an opportunity to save money and, more importantly, protect our only water source from the risks of salt-water contamination.”

Typically, the use of a smart irrigation controller allows the average residential user to see a reduction in water use by approximately 30 percent. This amount of savings equates to an estimated $100 savings in customers’ water bills over the course of the irrigation season.

“Both of these programs to incentivize the use of smart irrigation controllers are available on a first-come, first served basis, so we encourage interested residents to reach out to as soon as possible,” said PWWD Commissioner Peter Meyer. “The increased adoption of smart irrigation controllers is just one of the many steps the District is taking to reduce water consumption by 15 percent. We look forward to partnering with our residents to reach this goal and further protect our water supply now and in the future.”
