Port school district begins construction

Construction work will begin in the coming week on a pair of Port Washington School District elementary schools.

Manorhaven and Guggenheim Elementary schools will undergo the construction of new general classrooms and a multipurpose room that will be used for special STEM courses. Guggenheim will also receive interior renovations.

“Please be assured that our district will maintain a safe school environment throughout the construction project, including an update of the school emergency plan to reflect any temporary exits or procedures needed as a result of the construction work,” Superintendent Kathleen Mooney said in a statement.

She added that the construction would take place away from classes, as not to distract students and to keep noise at a reasonable level. She also said that all construction workers would be required to wear photo identification badges to gain access to the work sites.

The upgrades are expected to cost $31.5 million out of the district’s $69 million fund for capital projects. Spending on these projects was approved by Port Washington residents in a capital improvement bond referendum held in March 2015.

This is not the only work being done on Guggenheim this year. In July, repairs began on the school’s roof, which had previously been leaking water into the hallways.
