Port students honored in NYS Social Sciences Competition

Thirteen research students from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington have been honored in the New York State Archives research competition, which encourages students to explore the wealth of historical records found in archives, libraries and other community organizations throughout the state.

“We are proud of all the great STEM work that is done in the Schreiber Research Program and we look forward to future awards and recognition in the months to come,” said Schreiber Social Studies Department Chairperson Lawrence Schultz, who in addition to lauding the 13 award-winners, congratulated teachers teachers George Muhlbauer and Dr. David O’Connor for their guidance.

Four students received Honorable Mention in the competition. The team of Brittany Polevikov and Dalia Bercow were recognized for their research paper titled “Intravenous Drug Use on the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in New York City.” Lucu Hurt and Leah Taylor and also received Honorable Mention for their papers titled “The Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake” and “Coney Island as a Catalyst for Integration,” respectively.

Nine of the Schreiber honored researchers received certificates of Merit for their work. They are Nathan Abramowitz, Jake Diamond, Sarah Finkelstein, Matthew Gawley, Cameron Helman, Sofia Kuusisto, Adi Levin, Caitlin Maley and Mari Mirasol.

“Once again, our Schreiber research students have made an impressive showing in the annual competition,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney. “There is such a rich collection of historical information covering a wide range of defining moments in New York’s great history, and through their in-depth and thoughtful research papers these students have proven to be among the best at telling these stories.”
