The executive board of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce has decided to cancel the 2020 HarborFest celebration due to safety concerns from the coronavirus.

According to an email from Executive Director Bobbie Polay, the chamber made the decision unanimously, albeit “with very heavy hearts.”

“Some key elements of HarborFest could not happen if we postponed it, and there is too much uncertainty about how the virus will act in the coming weeks and months,” Polay wrote. “We know that businesses will need time to recover from this crisis, and we plan to come back bigger and stronger in 2021.”

Originally scheduled for June 7, this year’s festival would have been the 30th.

The annual celebration traditionally spans from lower Main Street to the Town Dock, showcasing Port Washington merchants, cuisine and organizations.

Polay wrote that the decision was not one “any of us had hoped for but it is the safest one.”

“When things settle down, we will talk about other things we might do to help our local businesses and celebrate our wonderful community,” Polay wrote. “In the meantime, stay safe.”
