Port students stay active during summer months

Even though school is out for the summer, Port Washington students are still putting in work.

About 45 students last week participated in the Port Washington school district’s Summer Enrichment program that offers three different programs that encourage independent and cooperative work, officials said.

The program, which was held in conjunction with Nassau BOCES, offers a architecture class, a logic and computer programming course and a theatre and games and improvisation class.

Students who participated in the architecture class designed and built miniature structures from Keva planks and paper.

Students in the logic and computer programming course learned online coding skills using the drag and drop method with programs such as Blockly and Scratch.

Theatre games and improvisation students “expanded their imaginations while laughing, communicating and problem-solving,” a news release said.

“While summer is a time for students to take a breather from the challenges of a busy school year, their minds should remain active,” Port Washington Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney said. “That’s why we always encourage them to read regularly during the break and spend time on tasks through an instructional camp or valuable enrichment program such as this. We are proud to partner with Nassau BOCES once again to offer our kids an opportunity to express their creativity and innovation in a relaxed, intimate and fun environment.”
