The lighting of the Christmas tree in Port Washington’s Blumenfeld Family Park will still take place this year, but with a few adjustments due to COVID-19.

In a Facebook post, the Port Washington Christmas Tree Lighting Committee said the event, scheduled for Dec. 6, will be held virtually, “since it is not possible to have the event at the park in our present situation.”

The committee said the event will feature music and words from “the Angel Gabriel,” leading into the countdown and the lighting of the Christmas tree, and featuring a special message from Santa Claus. Notably absent from this year will be the traditional live Nativity scene in front of the tree, which will not be possible due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Safety is our top priority for the community, so even though we will not be gathering together, we are working to make our Virtual Lighting a memorable event,” the committee said in the post. “The Christmas Tree Lighting Committee encourages the members of our Port Washington community to light their own tree at home at the same time to join in on the holiday spirit.”

The committee is also holding a fundraiser through a GoFundMe page to trim the tree.

“Our beautiful tree has grown and we are in need of some new ornaments and lights,” the committee said in a statement on the GoFundMe page. “We look forward to bringing back the live Nativity next year and will also need a new creche/manger too.”

As of Monday afternoon, the campaign had raised $380 of the $1,000 goal.

“No amount is too small,” the committee wrote. “Be part of the magic! Let’s keep our Magnificent Christmas Tree glowing with lights and ornaments and keep the Miracle of Christmas alive in Port Washington.”

The virtual broadcast will start at 6 p.m. on the Port Washington Christmas Tree Lighting Facebook page on Sunday, Dec. 6.
