Two cats killed in Port house fire

No one was injured in a house fire in Port Washington on Sunday night that started in the home’s kitchen, fire officials said.

Port Washington Fire Department Chief Brian Waterson said the fire, which started around 6:40 p.m., caused damage to the house at 85 Bar Beach Road, but it is still inhabitable.

“Upon arrival the Fire Department was faced with heavy fire and smoke,” Waterson said. “Crews immediately began to fight the fire as well as protect the neighboring houses from further damage.”

The family was not home during the fire, but two cats were killed.

Waterson said it took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire, but they were on scene until 9 p.m. “checking for extension and additional fire spread.”

The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department and the Roslyn Highlands Fire Company assisted the Port Washington Fire Department.

There were 110 firefighters on the scene, Waterson said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause, but has determined the cause to be not suspicious, Waterson said.

Jimmy Warwick, who lives in a neighboring house, said a young family with children lives in the house.

“This is a really terrible time of year for something like this to happen,” Warwick said.

The family could not be reached for comment.
