The pilot shuttle bus that runs along West Shore Road and between Port Washington and Roslyn’s LIRR stations will expand its service northwest to Soundview Plaza beginning on Tuesday.

Nassau Inter-County Express bus system’s yearlong pilot program began in January after many at the Amsterdam senior living community and business owners in the West Shore Road industrial park petitioned for its establishment.

With the help of Nassau County Legislator Delia Deriggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove), the shuttle bus became a reality on a road that had no other public transportation options.

The expanded service will now include a stop at Soundview Plaza as well as Wildwood Gardens, Sandy Court, Steamboat Drive and Driftwood Drive.

Stops at Roslyn’s Clock Tower and Gerry Park will be by request only.

Soundview Plaza was selected for the addition based on the results of a Residents Forward-conducted survey from 2016. The survey found that 80 percent of the 1,000 respondents would consider taking a shuttle, and most responses came from Soundview.

The service expansion is done with the hope of increasing ridership on the shuttle to increase the likelihood of it becoming a permanent route, according to a news release.

“Commuter parking is an established challenge at many village parking lots, including Port Washington,” Carrie Miller, communications manager with Nassau Inter-County Express bus system, said. “The Port Washington shuttle is a response to this, to gauge the demand of area commuters trying to make it to the station.”

Rides will continue to cost $2.75 each way. From Tuesday to June 10, all rides are free.
