On Wednesday, Oct. 3, the coaches, grade coordinators, and commissioners of all the Port Washington Youth Activities’ sports attended a safety training event conducted by injury prevention educators from the Northwell Health System. The event was held at the Sousa School Auditorium in Port Washington.

The PYA Board of Directors solicited the expertise of Northwell Health in looking at the number of youth sports injuries nationally, which have continued to rise since 2001. The board feels that the best treatment for any injury is prevention and that the best medicine is education. As such, the program was mandatory for all coaches and commissioners, although PYA welcomed parents and anyone else affiliated with its programs, too.

There were over 80 attendees who heard talks on concussion recognition and action to take on the field, training for the prevention of sports injuries, and an overview of the PYA Safety Plan and the federally mandated 2017 Safe Sport Act.

PYA appreciates the support from Northwell Health and the dedication of all coaches, coordinators, and commissioners in attendance.  The PYA Safety Plan and policies can be viewed at pyasports.org/safety.
